Our Commitment to Your Privacy

At Civix, we believe privacy is a fundamental right. This Privacy Policy explains our commitment to protecting your personal information and maintaining your trust while you use our privacy education platform.

Hosting Platform Data Collection

Our website is hosted on AWS Amplify, which automatically collects certain technical data for service operation:

• IP addresses: Used for routing requests and geographic distribution

• Request URLs: Which pages and resources you access on our site

• User-Agent strings: Browser and device information for content delivery

• HTTP response codes: Technical status of your requests (200, 404, etc.)

• Request timestamps: When you access our content

• Geographic location: Derived from IP address for content delivery optimization

This data is collected automatically by AWS's infrastructure and is governed by Amazon's Privacy Policy. We do not have direct access to or control over this infrastructure-level data collection.

What We Don't Collect

At the application level, we pride ourselves on minimal data collection:

• No application-level visitor tracking: We do not implement custom analytics or tracking

• No third-party analytics: We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or similar services

• No tracking cookies: We do not set any cookies for tracking or advertising purposes. The only cookies on this site are those required for authentication (see Cookie Policy below)

• No personal profiling: We do not create behavioral profiles or track your interests

Data Stored on Your Device

We store the following data locally in your browser to enhance your experience:

IndexedDB Storage:

• Image cache (CivixImageCacheDB): Company logos and educational graphics are cached as base64 data to improve loading speed and reduce repeated downloads

• Flashcard progress (civix-flashcards): Your completed flashcard bingo tiles for each company, stored locally for instant loading and synced with our server only when you are signed in

Browser Session Storage:

• Quiz completion status (civixQuizCompleted): Temporary flag indicating if you've completed a quiz session

• Selected companies (civixSelectedCompanies): Your current company selections during quiz setup

• Quiz results (civix_quiz_result): Temporary storage of your quiz results before viewing the results page

• History cache (civix-history-data): Cached copy of your quiz and flashcard history for faster page loads within the same browser tab

Browser Local Storage:

• Dark mode preference (civix-dark-mode): Remembers your light or dark theme choice across visits

Note: All this data is stored locally in your browser and is never transmitted to our servers unless you explicitly choose to sign in. You can clear this data anytime through your browser's storage management tools.

Cookie Policy

We do not use cookies for tracking, advertising, or analytics purposes. However, when you choose to sign in, our authentication system stores essential cookies on your device to maintain your session:

• Session token (next-auth.session-token): A secure, encrypted cookie that keeps you signed in. This cookie expires after 24 hours or when you sign out.

• CSRF token (next-auth.csrf-token): A security cookie that protects against cross-site request forgery attacks. It is used only to verify that authentication requests originate from our site.

• Callback URL (next-auth.callback-url): A temporary cookie that ensures you are redirected to the correct page after signing in.

These cookies are strictly functional and are only set when you authenticate. They contain no personal information and are not used for tracking or profiling. If you do not sign in, no cookies are stored on your device. All authentication cookies are removed when you sign out, and all user-specific cached data (quiz progress, flashcard progress, EULA analyses) is also cleared at that time.

Optional Login Information

If you choose to sign in with Google:

• We only receive your email address and display name

• This information is used solely to personalize your learning experience

• We will never sell, rent, or share your email address with third parties

• Preference settings: Your quiz progress and learning preferences are stored in our backend only when you're logged in

Data Security

The minimal data we do collect is protected through industry-standard security measures, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and secure authentication protocols. Since we collect so little data, your risk exposure is minimal.

Third-Party Services

We use minimal third-party services:

• Hosting: AWS Amplify for website hosting and content delivery. AWS may collect infrastructure-level data such as IP addresses and request logs as described in the Hosting Platform Data Collection section above.

• Authentication: Google OAuth for sign-in (optional)

Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access any data we have about you (which is minimal)

• Use our platform without creating an account

• Contact us with any privacy concerns after logging into the site

Changes to This Policy

We will update this privacy policy if our practices change. Any updates will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
